The Challenge/Concern:
Combustion byproducts of typical fuels contain hazardous gases including green house gases. A systemic solution is desired to eliminate release of such gases to environment. The expected solution can be applied to stationery engines.
Brief (and non-confidential) Solution
A compact scrubbing was developed for removal of multiple pollutants. Scrubbing is industrial process widely used for removal of pollutants from flue gases. Its miniature version can be effectively deployed to treat engine exhaust gases. The scrubbing can be achieved by contacting of exhaust gas with the scrubbing liquid. It can be facilitated by a venturi mixing or static mixing or packed block or tray contacting or cyclone. The contacting can be done across the tailpipe or before muffler. The scrubbing liquid is to be circulated over the contacting portion. After run of a few weeks, the scrubbing capacity can be regenerated by an automatic process. It is a generic solution that can be specified for various target characteristics, fuels and engine designs. Aqueous H2O2 can be used for removal of NOx and SO2 & NH3. Use of venturi design is able to scrub particulates upto 1 micron size along with NOx and SO2 & NH3. Some of the hydrocarbons can be expected to be removed with same equipment. We also propose a theoretical innovation for CO2 mitigation through same equipment.
