The Challenge / Concern:

 Pencil manufacturing relies on huge consumption of high quality wooden blocks. For sake of environmental welfare and reduction in costs, substitutes to wood in the pencil design were required.

Brief (and non-confidential) Solution:

A method for recovery of cellulose fibrils from spent or abandoned materials was previously developed. We proceed to develop the stiff blocks through route of pulping. A composite was determined to have physical properties suitable for pencil manufacturing. The composite can be deployed ad a raw material to current pencil manufacturing lines. Further, it can be used to produce pencils by routes of casting or molding.
