The Challenge / Concern:

Alkanes typically get oxidized to carbon dioxide and water. A client desired to directly convert light alkanes into alcohols through catalysis.

Brief (and non-confidential) Solution

Oxidation of alkanes to yield alcohols with higher selectivity is explored recently. Titanosilicalite TS-1 catalyses oxidation of light alkanes (including n-butane) and to give the corresponding isomeric alcohols and ketones. Also, few zeolites containing transition metal ions are known to selectively oxidize benzene to phenol. Embarking on such findings in the literature, we developed chemically impregnated oxidation catalysts with transition metals. Variation in the porous bulk among different zeolites and xerogels, and variation in the filler moieties and the parameters lead to varying results. Two combinations were found interesting can taken to optimization. The optimized catalyst synthesized by chemical vapor impregnation yielded sufficiently high selectivity for oxidation of alkanes to corresponding alcohols.
