Monomer content reduction in finished polymer

The Challenge/Concern

Typical polymerization (especially free radical) reaction rarely achieve the completion, leading to the presence of unreacted residual monomer in the polymer. Besides affecting polymer properties, residual monomers are also often toxic and affect compatibility. A process for production of four different polymers having very low levels of residual monomers was desired.

Brief (and non-confidential) Solution

Prevailing process of polymer production practiced by the client was configured. The dominant mechanisms behind the problem were cage effect and glass effect. Devolatilization, stripping, Proper Initiator Choice, and physio-chemical monomer removal were concerned. Synchronization and optimization among the choices lead to the conclusion. A production  protocol was delivered to the client that lead to desired results upon practice.
